Built to Last: Our Story Through the Years

First Generation
Chuck and Hanna Groathouse originally operated as “Charles Groathouse, General Contractor” in Laramie, WY.

1984-1988
Our early work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers helped shape the foundation of our quality control standards and documentation practices, many of which we still use today. CSA Shops Project at FE Warren AFB was our first project with a computer schedule and the first project we had a computer on-site.

2nd Generation
In 1989, Ken and Dan Groathouse took the reins from their parents and began laying the groundwork for business succession and employee ownership. They launched the profit sharing, retirement, and stock purchase plans that continue to support our team today.

Snow Lodge
Crews snowmachined 30–70 miles into Yellowstone to reach the Snow Lodge site. Winter work rotated two weeks on, one week off, with crews living in trailers and park dorms.

1998
Groathouse and Hixon Management developed a custom surveying program for the High Security/Special Needs Penitentiary. “The Hixon Program” was used for years, and still used on some jobs today.

1999
In 1999, we expanded our roots and opened an office in Cody, Wyoming, marking the beginning of our long-standing presence in the Bighorn Basin. Over the years, we operated from multiple locations around Cody before building our current office in 2022.

1999
The same year that we opened an office in Cody, we also began advocating for improved project delivery methods. Working with industry partners and legislators, we helped pave the way for negotiated delivery on public projects in Wyoming, including Construction Manager at Risk. Paint Rock Camp in Hyattville, Wyoming was our first Construction Manager At Risk project.

3rd Generation
We became majority employee-owned in 2005 and opened a location in Casper, Wyoming. The legislation allowing negotiated work is what set the stage for where the company is today. It provided a way to better manage employee utilization and planning, reducing the long, sometimes inactive periods between successful bids. This led to the strengthening of our talent through retention of long-term employees, furthered employee ownership opportunities, and help us maintain our value system.

2021
Completed the Wyoming State Hospital in Evanston, our largest project to date. The work included a 121,000 SF addition and 71,000 SF renovation to an active facility, with phased construction, secure operations, and close collaboration to meet the State’s budget.

4th Generation
We continue to grow, combining decades of expertise with modern innovation. Today, we remain committed to building Wyoming with integrity, precision, and a strong team-driven approach.
